Young musicians perform at State Solo & Ensemble Festival

A State Solo & Ensemble Festival event was held at Viterbo University in La Crosse on Saturday.

Middle and high school students from the area performed songs for judges at the Fine Arts Center.

To qualify for state, students had to earn a top score on a difficult piece of music during the district competitions.

Laura Schram, a program manager with the Wisonsin School Music Association, said music teaches students life skills like discipline and self-confidence that they can carry with them for the rest of their life.

“Music can be a life-long tool. It’s something that we hope that they take with them whether it be a career in music or if they come home at night and need stress relief,” said Schram.

The event in La Crosse is one of nine of its kind being held in Wisconsin.

All together, more than 32,000 students will perform for State Solo & Ensemble.
