Young homebuyers head to La Crosse Area Parade of Homes

The La Crosse Area Builders Association Parade of Homes came to a close Sunday

The La Crosse Area Builders Association Parade of Homes came to a close Sunday. The two week event attracted nearly 3,000 people including many new or first-time homebuyers.

Newly engaged couple Krista Plaschko and Nate Alvin put the Packers game on pause and took time out of their Sunday to explore the La Crosse Area Parade of Homes.

“It’s just fun to come out and see all of the beautiful houses that are being built,” Alvin said.

The new homeowners bought a house in Holmen  a few months ago and headed to the nearby parade for inspiration.

“Just a huge, different variety and stuff of materials and style and things you didn’t think you’d maybe like and then you get to see it in person,” Alvin said.

Plaschko often turns to a typical outlet for design ideas.

“Well, HGTV I love watching,” she said.

However, the Parade of Homes has helped her and others get up close and personal with new trends.

“You can come in and touch it feel it and see it in 3D,” said Ed Haupt the president of La Crosse Area Builders Association.

Haupt said this year’s event was filled with younger couples.

“They had a starter home, a home they bought and fixed up and now they are moving into something like this,” Haupt said.

He said those couples are using social media sites like Pinterest to recreate  ideas for their home.

“You bring us a picture we knock it off just like the picture,” Haupt said.

And that is leading to homes with more personal touches.

“Houses used to be not as detailed, maybe we’d see just laminate countertops, we see more solid surface stuff now, much more built-in stuff, lockers, different kinds of unique textures on walls and ceilings,” Haupt said.

And getting to see those new trends firsthand is what is keeps couples like Plaschko and Alvin returning year after year.

“We have a basement to finish so probably,” Plaschko said.

“We’ll be back next year for sure,” Alvin said.
