You can’t keep a good Muse down: Popular North Side theater to move to Cavalier

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — It didn’t take The Muse Theatre long to find a place to land, after announcing Monday that it was closing its curtain.

The longtime North Side theater will move into the Cavalier Theater & Lounge in downtown La Crosse, the Cavalier announced on its Facebook page Wednesday.

“The costs of running a small independent theatre and trying to survive the sh–show that rona dumped on small businesses made The Muse a casualty,” according to the Cavalier’s announcement.

“Instead of pouring one out for our dead homie during their time of grieving, we’re opening our doors so their flamboyant, raunchy, bawdy, over the top, live out loud productions can continue to entertain,” the Cavalier notice noted.

“This one is a no brainer for us. Vicki Elwood has been one of our biggest champions since day one and has always given us kindness and support. She’s been talking with us for months about the situation, and since our stage has a 45-year history embedded deep in its bones of putting on plays before we took it over, there couldn’t really be a better fit,” the Facebook post said.

Cavalier owner Jason LaCourse vowed that, “Besides their theatrical zanniness, we are going to be convincing Vicki to start putting on regular burlesque, cabarets, drag shows, and other tawdry naughtiness too while we focus on our concerts.”

The Muse, founded by Vicki and Don Elwood, indicated optimism even as it announced its closure on Facebook Monday, with a post saying, in part, “Sometimes you’re happy and sometimes you’re sad, but the world goes ’round. Sometimes you lose every nickel you had, but the world goes ‘round. Sometimes your dreams get broken in pieces, but that doesn’t alter a thing. Take it from me, there’s still gonna be a summer, a winter, a fall and a spring.”

The post continues, “Sometimes a friend starts treatin’ ya bad, but the world goes ’round. And sometimes your heart breaks with a deafening sound! Somebody loses, somebody wins. One day it’s kicks, then it’s kicks in the shins. But the planet spins and the world goes round. And round and round and round and round!”
And so it goes, The Muse will continue going ’round, and ’round, at the Cavalier.
