WSU Upsets No. 3 Central Missouri, 4-3, At College World Series

CARY, NC — The Cinderella season for the Warrior baseball team continued on after WSU upset No. 3 ranked Central Missouri 4-3 on a hot afternoon in Cary, NC.

Winona State got the runs going early in the bottom of the first with a Tony Mueller single and was later driven in after a Joe Kley single into left field.  Again, in the next inning WSU Cody Strang hit a leadoff double and John Magee would later walk.  Both runners went on to score after a Seth McMullen single through the left side giving the Warriors a 3-0 lead.

Much like the second inning Strang hit a leadoff double into right field in the fourth. Kyle Sill followed with a single scoring Strang from second giving WSU a 4-0 lead. Central Missouri made the game interesting in the top of the ninth inning and two outs when Matt LaGree hit a two run home run that just cleared the left field fence to cut the WSU lead down to one.

The home run was too little and too late for the Mules as WSU took the first game of the NCAA Division II College World Series, 4-3. Mueller started the game for WSU and pitched effectively, throwing a complete game with nine strikeouts and 140 pitches to earn his sixth win of the season.

Strang went 2-3 with two double and two runs scored. Prior to this game WSU has met Central Missouri 19 times and winning only twice in program history.

The win is also the first for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) at the NCAA Division II College World Series.
