Woman seriously injured in Monroe County crash; driver arrested for suspected OWI

An Oakdale woman was seriously injured when a suspected drunk driver hit her vehicle early Sunday morning. Charles Davis Jr., 36, of Tomah, was arrested by the Wisconsin State Patrol for operating while intoxicated.

The Monroe County Communications Center received a 911 call at 2:37 a.m. for a report of a crash on State Highway 21 near Ensign Road. Upon arrival, first responders found two severely damaged vehicles.

A seriously injured woman was found in the front yard of a home on the state highway. Garrene Peaslee, 73, of Oakdale, was treated at the scene by Tomah Area Ambulance Service. She was flown to Gundersen Medical Center in La Crosse for potentially life-threatening injuries.

Davis was arrested and booked at the Monroe County Jail.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol are investigating the crash.

Traffic on State Highway 21 was restricted to one lane for almost five hours while authorities investigated the scene.

The Oakdale Fire Department, Oakdale first responders, Tomah Fire Department, Monroe County District Attorney’s Office and Monroe County Highway Department also assisted with the incident.
