UPDATE: Woman dies in fiery Sparta crash, man seriously injured

SPARTA (WKBT) — A rural Sparta woman died and a man was severely injured in a fiery crash Sunday in Sparta.

Police were called to the intersection of Hwy. 16 and Aspen Boulevard at about 10:40 a.m. They arrived to find a truck on fire and witnesses removing two people from the vehicle, according to the Sparta Police Department.

Mary Slonka died at the scene. Timothy Slonka was taken to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse by GundersenAIR with life-threatening injures.

Fatal Sparta Crash

The road was closed for four hours and the crash remains under investigation by the Sparta Police Department and Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit. Police say a fire hydrant was sheared off by the crash and was found inside a nearby unoccupied building.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Sparta Ambulance, Sparta Fire, Sparta Public Works, Monroe County Medical Examiner’s office, Monroe County Communication Center, Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, and GundersenAIR also responded to the scene.
