Wisconsin Revenue Department reverses payment error

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Department of Revenue says it automatically withdrew money from the accounts of more than 5,100 taxpayers in error but it has corrected the problem.

The department said in a statement Tuesday that 5,154 individuals and small business owners who make installment payments were affected. The original withdrawal was done on May 15 and the duplicate was taken out Tuesday.

Department spokeswoman Stephanie Marquis says the mistake affected individual taxpayers and small business owners who have been delinquent in paying their taxes and had set up a payment plan.

The department says the mistake was caught immediately and the money will be refunded Wednesday. It has also asked financial institutions involved to waive any overdraft fees and letters are being sent notifying affected taxpayers.
