Wisconsin native safe after being aboard wrecked ship

COLEMAN, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin native tells her mother she’s OK after being evacuated from that stricken cruise ship off the coast of Italy.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports Coleman native Jill Zeitler was aboard the Costa Concordia on Friday when it hit rocks and capsized.

Zeitler’s mother, Julie, says she spent nearly eight anxious hours waiting for word after her 32-year-old daughter texted that she and her boyfriend were being evacuated from the ship.

Julie Zeitler got a text message at 5:30 p.m. Friday, then heard nothing more. She says it wasn’t until about 1 a.m. Saturday that her daughter was able to call and say she and her boyfriend were OK.

The death toll from the disaster rose to 11 Tuesday when divers extracted five bodies from the ship’s wreckage.
