Wisconsin National Guard ending deployment at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — The Wisconsin National Guard is pulling troops out of La Crosse’s Hillview Health Care Center.

The guard deployed eight soldiers in January to work as certified nursing assistants at the nursing home.

The partnership allowed Hillview to admit more patients from local hospitals during the surge in omicron COVID cases.

The task force’s medical adviser, Randall Myszka, said the soldiers forged a lot of relationships with patients at the nursing home.

“It’s bittersweet — I’ll tell you that,” Myszka said. “I mean, we’ve had a lot of soldiers that have made good friends not only with the staff, the administration, but the residents. And those are very tough for us to leave. And a lot of the soldiers are going to leave a lasting impression with them.”

The National Guard’s deployment to Hillview ends Sunday.
