Wisconsin DOT moving to seven digit license plates

New plates to offer 100-million combinations

You will soon notice new license plates in Wisconsin become a little longer.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation officials say the department is preparing to issue seven digit license plates this month. The Department of Motor Vehicles estimates the supply of license plates with six digits will soon run out.

The DOT says the old, six digit combinations allowed for about 20-million unique combinations, while the new plates will offer more than 100-million.

Wiscosnin DMV officials say the change should not impact drivers much.

“Really, it’s no big change for the public at all. The main thing is that the license plate numbers, you will now see some of them will have a seventh digit.”

Local DMVs and 3rd party organizations will continue to issue the six character plates until they run out.
