Wisconsin braces for annual truck safety checks

Wisconsin law enforcement is bracing for traffic safety checks of large commercial vehicles Tuesday through Thursday.

The State Patrol is participating in the annual Roadcheck program sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

The three-day safety effort is intended to increase compliance with all commercial motor vehicle driving and equipment regulations and increase the number of drivers wearing safety belts.

The state transportation department says large-truck crashes dropped about 27 percent last year compared with 2003 while fatalities were down 33 percent.
