Wisconsin agencies pinpoint $70 million in savings to cover COVID-19 losses
Cuts are intended to help cover anticipated revenue losses from pandemic
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin agencies have identified $70 million in cost savings to help cover anticipated revenue losses this fiscal year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a state report.
The cuts were scoped out in less than 30 days in response to Gov. Tony Evers’ direction to address the losses, Wisconsin Department of Administration Secretary Joel Brennan said today.
The savings, which are funded primarily through taxpayer investments, amount to roughly a 5 percent reduction.
“These budget reductions will immediately save significant tax dollars because this administration is serious about doing everything we can to stabilize the state budget,” Brennan said.
“But we also know that these reductions are just the first steps of many tough decisions we are going to have to make in the weeks and months to come.”
The DOA and a gubernatorial team worked with state agency leaders to determine creative ways to meet the targeted reductions, Brennan said.
