Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez formally retiring in June

Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez is formally resigning on June 30, 2021, after 32 years at the university, per an official press release.

Alvarez has presided over Badger athletics for the last 18 years. In that span, Wisconsin has won a total of 16 national titles and 74 conference regular season or tournament titles.

“It has been an honor to be a part of Wisconsin Athletics and I take great pride in all we have accomplished over the last three decades,” Alvarez said via the release. “From championships, to improvements on campus, to impacting thousands of student-athletes, it’s been a great ride. I’m grateful for the support, generosity, enthusiasm and loyalty of Badgers in the state of Wisconsin and beyond. Thank you.”

Before serving as AD, Alvarez revitalized Wisconsin Football as head coach from 1990 to 2005 and is the program’s winningest head coach at 119-74-4.

Wisconsin Athletics will host “Thanks Coach! Celebrating Three Decades of Excellence” at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday live on the Big Ten Network.
