Winona Sheriff identifies man who drowned near Latsch Island
WINONA, Minn. (WKBT) – The name of the man who drowned near Latsch Island has been released by the Winona Sheriff’s Department.
Artrazious Hakim Tyrek Finchis, 19, had jumped from the swing bridge along with five others, then floated down the river. He then jumped from the wing dam and started to struggle, authorities say. Finchis called for help a few times and went underwater, said Sheriff Ron Ganrude.
Rescue crews were called to the area of Latsch Island around 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 2.
About a half-hour passed between the time of the call and when Finchis was pulled from the water, Ganrude said. Crews worked on him for another half hour before he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Finchis, a native of Mississippi, recently moved to Winona.
