Winona Senior High School students lead vigil in support of Ukraine

Winona Senior High's 'United' club organizes support for Ukraine; speak about against war

WINONA, Wis. (WKBT) – Winona Senior High School students took action Sunday night to show they support Ukraine. The community came together for a vigil of solidarity for the people of Ukraine.

A group of Winona senior high school students planned this event at Windom Park. The “United” club at the high school organized Sunday’s gathering with help from one teacher. Organizers say it’s the best they can do, for now, to support democracy from afar.

“We’re doing it to show that we stand with them and that we support them and that we see them,” said Freyja Wolfe, a student at Winona Senior High School. “And also to support and call for the end of imperialism and war, and the subjugation and killing of innocent people.”

Students used social media to help get the word out about support for Ukraine. Students are also looking to raise money to support the country during this time.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz proclaimed Sunday, March 6, 2022, as Ukrainian Solidarity Day in Minnesota. The governor chose to honor the people of Ukraine fighting to defend their country and their freedom.

Walz released a statement saying – “We stand with our Ukrainian community here in Minnesota and abroad as the brave and resilient people of Ukraine continue to defend freedom and democracy against this unlawful, unprovoked Russian invasion.”
