Winona Afghan Support Network welcomes refugees with community event
WINONA, Minn. (WKBT) – A film screening event in Winona Saturday helped welcome Afghan refugees to the community.
At the Winona Arts Center, five recently resettled Afghan refugees spoke to attendees.
Organizers screened two 20-minute films. One concerned immigrants released from ICE detention centers and being reunited with their family. The other was about an aspiring Arab-American comedian finding independence.
Donations to the Winona Afghan Support Network help local refugees start a new life in the United States.
“All the donations go directly to helping these families and individuals with things like rent, utilities, food, until they get up on their feet and can start being empowered and can make their own way,” said Kathy Florin.
The event wrapped up with Afghan food for everyone to enjoy.
