WIAA cancels annual meeting, delays decision on spring sports

An official press release Thursday from the WIAA says its Board of Control voted to cancel its 2020 annual meeting and to delay making a decision on the future of the 2020 spring sports season.

The release says the decision comes as an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Per the release, “Given the directives of Governor Tony Evers and the Department of Health Services, and after lengthy discussion, the Board decided to postpone any decision to cancel the spring sports seasons and the spring State Tournament Series until a later date…A clearer position may unfold as developments arise and new information becomes available.”

The WIAA says they have discussed “bringing closure” to the 2020 winter sports seasons, which were canceled before the girls state basketball tournament could finish and a week before the boys tournament was to take place in Madison.

The Board also voted to authorize Executive Director Dave Anderson to access the organization’s financial reserves.
