WIAA Board of Control approves start dates for fall sports
Low-risk sports start Aug. 17, high-risk begin week of Sept. 7
The WIAA Board of Control voted 8-3 to approve start dates for fall sports in 2020.
Low-risk sports–which include girls golf and tennis, swimming, and cross country–will start practices on Aug. 17, and high-risk sports (football, soccer, and volleyball) will begin the week of Sept. 7.
An amendment proposed by Wauwatosa superintendent Phil Ertl had proposed to move the high-risk start date up to Aug. 24, but that was voted down 9-2.
Under the approved dates, football would have two weeks of practice, six weeks of a regular season, and three weeks of a postseason. Soccer and volleyball would have a week of practice before diving into regular season play.
Per the WIAA’s official release, “The earliest dates for the first competitions are Aug. 20 for girls golf, Aug. 21 for girls tennis, Aug. 25 for cross country, and girls swimming and diving. The earliest permissible date for the first boys soccer, and boys and girls volleyball contests are Sept. 15, and the first possible football game may be scheduled Wednesday, Sept. 23, if the first practice is conducted on Sept. 7.”
The board also agreed that if schools cannot participate in the fall due to local health restrictions, then the WIAA would provide a southwest Wisconsin-like proposal that would allow those schools to find games to play during the spring. Full details for that idea were not solidified in the meeting but will be addressed in the future as needed.
