Western Technical cancels winter, spring sports seasons

Western Technical College is canceling the upcoming winter and spring sports seasons, per an official press release.

The decision affects baseball and both basketball programs.

Athletic director Ryan Monroe says their conference, the MCAC, had given member schools a hard deadline of November 16 to decide their plans for the upcoming seasons, and Western Tech didn’t feel the county’s situation afforded them the green light to play.

“It is disappointing that we had to make a decision early, especially given the spring months,” Monroe said, “but there are a lot of external factors we also have to weight, as far as scheduling of buses and getting schedules figured out and worked out for who’s all going to be participating. That was one reason why the conference had an early date for that.

“Our community is resilient. We will get through this. It will be a matter of time, but we’ve got to stay diligent at the public health practices that we need to do in the interim.”

The women’s team was due to follow up their national championship season from a year ago.

NJCAA teams who do play the winter season will begin play in January.
