West Des Moines district considers closing school

One of West Des Moines’ first elementary schools would close under a budget-cutting proposal by the school district.

The Des Moines Register reports that the budget released Friday night proposes to close Phenix Early Childhood Center, which serves 180 preschool through third-grade students. The move is projected to save the district $1.1 million.

Phenix’s students would be moved to nearby schools.

Phenix was originally built in 1894 to serve elementary and high school students. It was rebuilt in 1939 as a Works Progress Administration project under the New Deal era of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
