Officials: Contrary to rumors, Neshonoc Dam not failing

Lake Neshonoc off limits to boaters

WEST SALEM, Wis. (WKBT) - High waters are causing the La Crosse County Sheriff's office to close boat traffic on West Salem's Lake Neshonoc until further notice.

The lake has swelled past its banks due to high water on the La Crosse River.

Water is also entering the powerhouse at the Neshonoc dam, but dam operators say it's not a serious problem, and contrary to rumors, the dam is not failing.

"They're not failing at all. They look spectacular and interesting, and that's why you're here, but that's a normal occurrence, relatively normal anyway for a dam. They're designed to handle this and to deal with it, it's just something you don't see every day," said Scott Purlee, Regional Manager for Eagle Creek Renewable Energy.

High waters on the La Crosse River are also forcing Veterans Memorial Campground in West Salem to be closed until further notice.
