Watch Now: Prairie du Chien police rescue woman and dog from Mississippi River
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (WKBT) — A woman and her dog were rescued from the Mississippi River after falling through the ice in Crawford County, according to the Prairie du Chien Police Department.
Officers responded to a call that a woman had fallen through the ice at about 1:33 p.m. Jan. 15 near the Prairie Du Chien Marina on the Mississippi River. They searched the area and found the woman and her dog with only their heads above water.
Police saw her head disappear under the water several times.
Despite struggling with reaching the ice themselves — two officers fell through the ice themselves during the rescue — police were able to get both the woman and her dog out of the river.
Witnesses told police the woman fell through after attempting to rescue her dog, who was not on a leash, from the river.
