WAFER reports increase in families in need
More than 55,000 meals provided in July
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — More La Crosse County families need help putting food on the table, according to WAFER Food Pantry’s monthly report.
It shows more than 1,700 families received food packages in July. The non-profit has not seen a need that large since early 2012.
The pantry says one big reason for the increase is that most area schools are not in session and because of this the pantry is seeing more children than ever coming in and requesting food.
“Summer is a particular hard time for parents trying to provide those extra meals for their children. At school they’re provided two meals and when school is not in session they are the ones who have to provide that,” said WAFER Executive Director Erin Waldhart.
Waldhart said about 55,000 meals were provided to area families in July.
