Volunteers pack 100 Thanksgiving meal boxes for families in need
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – A local group is helping our community this Thanksgiving.
On Tuesday, volunteers from Everyone Needs A Helping Hand gathered at the American Legion Post 52 to pack up Thanksgiving meal boxes for 100 area families in need.
Each box has all the Thanksgiving dinner necessities, including a turkey, potatoes, stuffing, a pumpkin pie, cooking instructions, and more.
Plus, each family gets a special card made by the kids at Spence Elementary.
The group got the word out about the boxes through its Facebook page.
“We put out a Google form and [families] filled out the form if they were in need. They filled out the questionnaire… if they’re able to cook the meal, and if they have the adequate stove and cooking utensils,” said Delania Heller, founder of Everyone Needs A Helping Hand.
Another organizer said the group wants to give these families a special Thanksgiving experience.
“There are a lot of families going through a lot of rough times right now, especially this year. It’s just a nice thing to do. There’s a lot of negativity in the world and this is just something positive we can put out there,” said Brooke Hardison.
This is the fifth year the group has put together these boxes — and the most they’ve ever sent out.
“I started this in my living room with two families,” Heller said. “I just wanted to reach out to touch people’s lives.”
Last year they helped 76 families.
