Viterbo sophomore, Onalaska grad Kowal stepping up at crucial time
Viterbo Volleyball secured a conference title over the weekend in a five-set comeback over Bellevue.
Besides an 0-2 hole in that match, the V-Hawks also needed a boost from an emergency setter after starter Abbey Johnson went down with an injury
The emergency hero was sophomore and Onalaska grad Cailie Kowal, who was an accomplished setter for the Hilltoppers but who hadn’t been needed at setter by her college team before Friday night.
“It was very nerve-wracking, but my team is so supportive, coaches so supportive, that it really helped me to settle in once I got in,” Kowal said.
“Cailie came in and did a heck of a job,” said head coach Ryan DeLong. “That was a really saving grace for us having someone like Cailie on the bench to come in and pick up that big spot.”
Viterbo will play in the conference tournament later this week.
