Vernon County Sheriff’s Office sets annual police memorial for May 11
VIROQUA, Wis. (WKBT) — The annual Vernon County Police Memorial Service will take place at 10 a.m. May 11 in front of the sheriff’s office at 1320 Bad Axe Court in Viroqua.
Guest speaker will be David Hartberg, CEO/administrator at Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua.
More than 60,600 law enforcement officers are injured in the line of duty every year, says Vernon County Sheriff John Spears.
Last year, 362 officers were killed in the line of duty, and 119 have been killed so far this year, Spears said. COVID-19 also took the lives of 297 officers in 2020 and 2021, including one from Wisconsin.
National Police Week will be observed May 9 thru May 15, Spears said. National Peace Officers Day will be observed on May 15 in Washington, D.C. The Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony will take place May 7 at the Capitol in Madison.
In the event of rain, the Vernon County service will be moved inside the sheriff’s office.
