Vernon County law agencies honor fallen officers during memorial service

VIROQUA, Wis. (WKBT) — This is National Police Week.

This is a time of the year when we recognize those in law enforcement who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office held a memorial service for those who sacrificed their lives protecting their communities Tuesday.

Officers from Viroqua, Westby, Hillsboro, Cashton, the Wisconsin State Patrol and other community members were among those at the service.

Sheriff John Spears paid his respects to the three Vernon County officers who lost their lives in the line of duty over the years.

“It does hit home,” Spears said. “Obviously with being a law enforcement officer for just under 40 years, I have seen my share of officer funerals, people that were killed in the line of duty and so forth. So, it is a somber moment to sit back and reflect on those individuals.”

Last year, 616 officers across the country died in the line of duty, Spears said.

So far this year, 102 officers have been killed.
