UWL police officer raises money for breast cancer research

A UWL police officer is hoping to do more than just fight crime on campus — he’s also joining the fight against breast cancer.

Officer Dave Pehl set up at Hoeschler Tower on campus Thursday morning with coffee, doughnuts and cupcakes while taking donations for breast cancer detection and treatment through the Susan G. Komen organization.

It’s a personal fight for Pehl, who has seen 11 of his relatives diagnosed with the disease, including his mother.

He says he hopes his fundraiser helps encourage young women on campus to check themselves and catch cancer early.

“Early detection was what was key to my mother’s survival,” said Pehl. “With the younger generation, the young ladies can still get it, and the key is early detection.”

Pehl organized a similar event 5 years ago, raising about $1000. He hoped to raise about $750 on Thursday.
