UW Health celebrates 12,000 kidney transplants

MADISON, Wis. (WKBT) — UW Health celebrated an important milestone this week in kidney transplants.

Over 12,000 kidneys have been transplanted since 1966.

UW Health’s program began in 1966 with an adult transplant followed by the first pediatric kidney a year later.

The medical director of the Transplant Center says the program’s success is all thanks to the community.

“So many people have contributed. so many people have worked together on a common goal,” said Medical Director Dr. Dixon Kaufman. “[And the amount that] they show how much they care about their patients is really the biggest heart of the program.”
