UPDATED: La Crosse gas station provides ‘brown bag special’ that concerns officers
Special includes copper scrubber, glass tube
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Update 7/21/17: News8000 has edited our original report to change to name of the gas station as the result of a change in the La Crosse Tribune’s information.
As efforts to combat illicit drug use continue in our area, local officers worry a La Crosse gas station is selling legal items that could be used as drug pipes.
The La Crosse Tribune reports the station at 1914 State Road in La Crosse sells the items to customers who ask for a “brown bag special.” For $5, the special includes a small paper bag filled with a copper scrubber and a glass tube disguised as a ballpoint pen.
The La Crosse Police Department says while many products can be used for drugs, this special is concerning.
“The fact that a local convenience store, gas station, took it upon themselves to have a ‘brown bag special,’ and to call it that and throw those two items together, when the only sole intent of those two items put together is for drug consumption, it just doesn’t seem right,” said La Crosse Police Department Captain Jason Melby.
The La Crosse Police Department’s Investigative Bureau attempted to get their own “brown bag special” from the same gas station. Investigators received the same copper scrubber and glass tube.
According to the La Crosse Tribune, The property at 1914 State Road is owned by AKD Petroleum LLC of Thiensville, Wis., according to La Crosse County property tax records. The registered agent lives in Mequon.
