Tips for safe Halloween decorating
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Decorating for Halloween is a fun tradition, but there are some tips to ensure you’re doing it safely.
The La Crosse Fire Department says it sees an increase in structure fires during this time of year, so it’s important to be aware of where you’re hanging your decorations and how you’re lighting your jack-o’-lanterns.
To prevent a fire, it’s recommended that you use battery powered candles or glow sticks for your jack-o’-lantern instead of a traditional candle.
And crepe paper is another popular decoration, but is also very flammable, so make sure you keep it away from open flames and heaters.
The La Crosse Fire Department community risk educator, Pat Corran, says it’s okay to decorate, but always make sure you have safety in mind.
“We’re absolutely not discouraging, we want to have fun, enjoy the holiday, enjoy Halloween, eat lots of candy, dress your house up, your kiddos up if you’d like, but just be conscientious about where you’re hanging your decorations.”
Fire officials say decorations can be a hazard indoors or outdoors.
