The Waterfront restaurant moves away from plastic straws

One of America’s favorite coffee shops is doing away with plastic straws, and they won’t be alone in La Crosse.

Starbucks announced it will replace plastic straws at all locations within 2 years over environmental concerns. In La Crosse, some downtown restaurants and bars are also making the change.

Managers at The Waterfront say it’s an important switch to help prevent pollution.

“Whether you’re a front-runner or not, if somebody’s making a movement to stop the pollution of our wildlife and seas and oceans and all that, I think that’s a huge help in everyday life,” said The Waterfront Restaurant Manager Christian Staehly.

Despite becoming one of the higher profile plastic items, straws only make up about 0.02-percent of all plastic in water around the world by weight.
