‘The Reunion’: Former Caledonia volleyball stars meet once again

Winona State upsets third-ranked Concordia Saint Paul

Football apparently is not the only sport in town in Caledonia, as Saturday afternoon a crowd of over 800 filled McCown gymnasium for a volleyball match-up between Winona State and Concordia-St. Paul that had plenty of local flare.

“When we were done with the game, I looked up, and the whole section was just all Caledonia,” said Warriors sophomore Maria Fruechte. “We’re just really lucky to have people like that, that care about us.”

Emma Lange and Fruechte were a big part of Caledonia’s run the state championship in 2012. And while they don’t play on the same team, they know their fondest memories come from back home.

“When we won in the sectional finals to go to state, that was really exciting,” said Lange. “Just being able to play with that team, the bus ride, the whole trip, the games, it’s just all really exciting.”

As it turns out, the state run in 2012 was envisioned by both girls long before high school.

“We had been playing together for years, and we had set that goal when we were in sixth grade that we wanted to make it to the state tournament,” said Lange. “We just all had the same passion and heart for each other. We went out, and we got it done.”
