The Latest: ex-Trump campaign adviser reports to prison
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos (all times local):
Former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos has started his two-week prison sentence.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons says Papadopoulos arrived Monday at a federal minimum-security camp in Oxford, Wisconsin.
He pleaded guilty last year to lying to federal agents about his interactions with Russian intermediaries during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Papadopoulos had sought a postponement of his prison term until an appeals court ruled in a separate case challenging the constitutionality of special counsel Robert Mueller’s appointment. But a federal judge rejected his last-minute bid to delay his sentence.
Papadopoulos’ sentence also includes a year of supervised release and community service.
A federal judge has ordered former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos to report to prison as scheduled, rejecting a last-minute bid to delay his two-week sentence.
Papadopoulos was sentenced in September for lying to the FBI in the Russia investigation. He had sought a delay until a court had ruled in a separate case challenging the constitutionality of special counsel Robert Mueller’s appointment.
But in an order Sunday, U.S. District Court Judge Randolph Moss said Papadopoulos had waited too long to contest his sentence. He is to report to prison Monday.
Moss noted that Papadopoulos had agreed not to appeal in most circumstances as part of his plea agreement, and the judge said the challenge to Mueller’s appointment was unlikely to be successful in federal appeals court.
