The dangers of feeding wildlife
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — In many cultures, seeing a fox out in the wild is good luck, but animal control specialists say getting too close can be harmful to their way of life.
At Pettibone Park in La Crosse, people have been feeding a family of foxes. The foxes have become comfortable around people and the road. Just last week, one was hit by a car and had to be euthanized.
Local animal control specialists say while you may have good intentions, taming wildlife isn’t doing the animals a favor.
“They’re not learning their true survivor skills out in the wild and they’re not getting what they would naturally eat. A lot of dog food cat food that is being left out there for them is not the right food for them. They’re reliant on that instead of what they should naturally eat,” said Kathy Kasakaitas from the Coulee Region Humane Society.
If you’re concerned about the health of a wild animal you should call the Animal Control Department. at 608-781-4014.
