Thanksgiving leftovers need to be stored correctly to ensure safety

Special attention should be given to stuffing and anything with potatoes in it

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Thanksgiving leftovers safety is not something that should be delayed.

Any leftovers should go into the refrigerator within two hours.

You can split up your food into smaller containers so they chill quickly.

And no matter how much you liked your meal, you should toss everything after four days.

It’s not just storing your food that you need to be careful about.

“It definitely is something that you need to reheat the food properly. So making sure that it then again is heated all the way through to also make the leftovers safe to consume,” said Mayo Clinic Health System chef Heather VanHorn.

Also when it comes to leftovers, pay special attention to the stuffing or dressing and anything that has potatoes in it.

Experts say if you leave those sitting out, spore forming bacteria that survived the cooking process can start growing at room temperature.
