Talk of the Town: Holmen “Friday Night Lights”
The Holmen Community Rallies around its team
HOLMEN, Wis. — It’s an end of the week tradition for a lot of communities. The play calls, the cheers and the fans.
Holmen’s football team heads into the playoffs this Friday as M-V-C Champions.
The Vikings go into the post-season with a guy whose been announcing the plays in the booth for 25 years.
In this week’s Talk of the Town… we go to Holmen for Friday Night Lights.
When these athletes hit the field on Friday nights and the lights come on…. it’s time to call the plays, move the ball and put points on the board.
But Wait,Time Out!
Sometimes the Scoreboard doesn’t tell the whole story.
It isn’t just what’s happening on the field, but in the stands, on the track and in the booth.
“It will be a first down. Holmen on their own 30,” you hear the announcer over the loudspeaker.
Mike Paoli has been announcing these games for Holmen for more than two decades.
“It’s kinda what you see on a TV show, Friday Night Lights and everybody comes and we’ve been very successful!”
A big Viking fan, his last child graduated more than 20 years ago.
“I enjoy being around the crowd. I enjoy the game. It just keeps you young,” says Paoli with a big grin.
And the Holmen fandom seems to have no boundaries.
Dean Peterson is a fan,”I graduated from Onalaska back in the day and we live in Holmen now, so either way I win!”
Elementary school kids at the game said they like to hang out with friends and watch the football game.
And Christina Craig loves coming back to see them play, “Because I just remember coming when I was in college and I just love coming to watch Holmen.”
It’s the Friday night show!
The field, the side lines, the barking and jumping in the student section, even flame throwing by the twirlers.
Mike has had a great seat to watch the program grow.
“Got a few new coaches now in the last few years. But the support has been there and it’s been a great tradition for Holmen.”
A tradition he helped build, as Mike gets set to retire from announcing after 25 years.
“All year, the crowds have been great. The kids have been great. The Holmen marching band has just been super!”
As they celebrate another successful season under the Friday Night Lights in Holmen.
Holmen will play DeForest this Friday night in round one of the playoffs.
