Study shows standing could help weight loss

According to a recent study, something as easy as standing could help you lose weight.

A Mayo Clinic Health system study says that standing burns .15 more calories per minute than sitting. By substituting standing instead of sitting for six hours a day, the average adult would lose roughly five and a half pounds in a year. On top of weight loss, standing for a few hours a day could reduce the risk of heart disease.

While the study shows many health benefits of standing, doctors at Mayo say you should not replace exercise with standing for long periods.

“Just standing alone could be a little stressful on the muscles and on the vessels and could lead to varicose veins, etc., so certainly a combination would be much better,” said Mayo Clinic Health System Cardiologist Tahir Tak.
