‘Steering into the Skid’ performance begins community discussion on dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Members of the La Crosse area came together today to learn more about a growing issue among the elderly.
A presentation, called ‘Steering into the Skid’, used theater and conversation to teach family, caregivers, and other community members about dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. This morning’s event, held by the Aging and Disability Resource Center of La Crosse County, presented local resources while giving attendees a new perspective on dementia.
Organizers say it’s important for people to show support for those receiving a dementia diagnosis.
“This would be an opportunity for family, friends to still gather around. ‘What can I do?’ ‘How can I help?’ Just be there supporting the caregiver as well as the person with dementia,” said Aging & Disability Resource Center of La Crosse County Supervisor Cheryl Neubauer.
‘Steering into the Skid’ has led 40 dementia performances and discussions in Wisconsin since 2015.
