State leaders hear from students, residents at Legislative Forum
Event hosted at UW-La Crosse
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Wisconsin legislators address the concerns of residents Friday at UW-La Crosse.
The Legislative Forum was a chance for state leaders to hear from students and residents in the La Crosse area. State Senator Jennifer Shilling and Representative Jill Billings attended the event.
The forum is sponsored by the UWL Joint Legislative Relations Regents Committee and the governance groups on campus.
State lawmakers say the biggest concerns were higher education and unpaid internships.
“For some students who don’t have as much money as a student who’s family pays for them to go to school, they’re kind of at a disadvantage. They don’t get to see those businesses and have a work experience like that,” said state Representative Billings.
Republican State Representatives Lee Nerison and Nancy VanderMeer were also scheduled to attend but were unable to make the forum. Nerison had a family emergency, while VanderMeer had a prior engagement in Madison.
