Standing in solidarity with Palestinians, local activists call on lawmakers to take action

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – People in our community gathered in front of Rep. Ron Kind’s office Friday evening to show solidarity with Palestinians.

They called on Rep. Kind (D-3rd Congressional District) to urge the State Department to pressure Israel to end the violence in Gaza and the displacement of Palestinian families.

In addition, they want him to co-sponsor a bill introduced by Minnesota Congresswoman Betty McCollum.

It’s called the “Defending The Human Rights Of Palestinian Children And Families Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act.”

It would hold the U.S. accountable for how taxpayer-funded aid is used by Israel.

The legislation includes prohibiting the country from using U.S. taxpayer dollars for the military detention, abuse, or ill-treatment of Palestinian children.

One organizer said this is Kind’s chance to help lead the way in protecting the human rights of Palestinians.

“It takes political courage because it means he has to take a stand that puts him forward. It’s not just following the crowd. It puts him forward,” said Bob Goonin, Jewish Voice for Peace and member of the Coulee Region Coalition for Palestinian Rights.

Goonin said people of all backgrounds came out to show their support, including Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities in our area.

The Coulee Region Coalition for Palestinian Rights and the La Crosse Interfaith Shoulder to Shoulder Network helped organize the demonstration.
