LA CROSSE, WI - After a 3-6 2016 campaign, the Central football team getting rid of the old playbook, will try something new this season.
The Red Raiders transitioning from a running attack to a more passer friendly spread offense. Sophomore Johnny Davis will be the decision maker, taking snaps behind center for the first time.
Central also returns junior A.C. Riley, who rushed for 423 yards last season.
Head Coach Tony Servais says Central has more athletic players, so the spread offense is a better fit.
"We want to try and spread the field. Make defenses cover everybody instead of focusing inside the box like we were with the veer. We want defenses to defend the whole field against us," Head coach Tony Servais said.
"I like it better than the old one because we can get the ball to our better wide receivers more and we have a lot of read options. It's a lot better to attack the defense," Sophomore quarterback Johnny Davis said.
Central begins the season at home Friday versus Eau Claire North.
