Sports Spotlight 6-10: Zach Friell

West Salem senior Zach Friell is the latest athlete in our Sports Spotlight.

Zach has been a passionate swimmer since he was young, but West Salem didn’t have a swim team his first two years of high school. Instead, he jumped at the chance in middle school to swim competitively year-round for the YMCA Wave swim team.

In February he qualified for his third trip to the YMCA National Championships, but it was canceled due to the pandemic.

During his years with the Wave Zach received numerous medals and team awards like Most Improved Swimmer, the Wave Team Leadership award and the Team Spirit award. He also stayed on the honor roll in high school while putting in three hour practices five times a week.

This past summer Zach helped run two swim camps focused on young swimmers interested in competitive swimming. These camps helped raise money to purchase new swim blocks for the Y.

As soon as the swimming community gets the green light to resume competition he will hit the water again for the Wave this summer, and after that he’ll swim and pursue an athletic training degree at UW-Stevens Point.
