Sports Spotlight 4-28: Brookwood’s Shelly Powell

In the latest Sports Spotlight is Brookwood High senior runner Shelly Powell.

Powell has run for both Brookwood track and field and cross country. She was a captain for the cross country team and had a productive senior season. She won the first invite of the year, she won the Scenic Bluffs conference title, took second at the Westby sectional, and recorded the top finish on her team at the D3 state meet. She even set a school record in the 5,000 meters.

Last spring was a breakout track season for Powell, as she qualified for state in three relay races. She and her teammates set a Brookwood school record in the 4×800 relay with a time of 10:07.39.

Her coach says she’s referred to by many on the team as Momma Shelly, because she’s such a leader and role model.

Powell is also second in her class academically and a WIAA Scholar Athlete finalist. She’ll continue her education at UWL next fall. Shelly Powell, in our Sports Spotlight.
