Sparta students learn to prepare for weather emergencies, disasters
SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) — Sparta students are learning to prepare themselves against weather disasters and emergencies.
Meadowview Intermediate School students took part in the ‘Student Tools for Emergency Planning’ or STEP program Monday. The program, run by Wisconsin Emergency Management, teaches students how to prepare and respond to different emergencies, like tornadoes or fires.
Organizers hope the students take Monday’s lessons home to start important discussions.
“It starts conversations with your families and whoever that may be, even your neighbors. Start coming up with those plans so that you can help your families, help your neighbors, help those around you, to stay safe,” said Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs Deputy Director of Public Affairs Major Joy Staab.
The STEP program also teaches students how to create their own emergency kits.
