Sparta students learn about budget balancing at “Reality Store” event

Event pairs students with income, expenses

Students in Sparta got a little dose of reality Tuesday, learning how to balance a budget.

The annual ‘Reality Store’ pairs each student with an income based on a chosen future career, and some of the expenses they may come across in life. Students visit booths, each set up with its own possibilities like buying a car or a home.

During the experience, random ‘tickets’ and other unforeseen expenses are also handed out to students.

“Once people are submerged into college they don’t really know what to do with themselves. They don’t know how to balance a checkbook and different things like that. We may have had it once or twice in Econ class, but you’ve never experienced it with your own set amount of money and gone through and actually had to live out one month,” said Sparta high School Junior Lydia Hone.

All Sparta High School Juniors participated in the Reality Store event.
