Sparta season preview

After an 0-8 year, Sparta hopes to turn things around this season.

71 players are in camp for the Spartans, but there are only ten seniors. Sparta Head Coach John Blaha says that means there isn’t one position with a definitive starter.

“There’s a lot of roles open, and there’s competition at every position,” Blaha said. “I couldn’t tell you a single position right now that someone’s name is on that top line.”

“It creates a lot of competition,” said senior running back/defensive back Josh Hesselberg. “It means every guy has to try their hardest if they want to start, if they want to get playing time. Everyone needs to try. No one has their spot on lock-down for sure.”

Blaha’s players describe him as “militant,” for good reason. For that story, and a complete preview of the Coulee Region football season, tune in to the News 8 Highlight Zone High School Football Preview Show: Sunday, Aug. 18 following News 8 at Ten.
