Sparta man charged with trying to grab officer’s gun

SPARTA (WKBT) — A Sparta man was arrested this week after he was accused of attempting to steal a police officer’s gun.

Anthony CoxAnthony Cox, 25, was charged Monday in Monroe County Circuit Court with seven felonies and eight misdemeanors in connection with an incident that took place Oct. 15 at the Monroe County Jail.

Cox refused to cooperate with a medical examination, according to the criminal complaint. He yelled and swore at the doctor, tried to push officers, then spit in a police officer’s face.

According to the Sparta Police Department, Cox also grabbed at one officer’s service weapon, threatening to shoot the officer during the confrontation. “You think I’m playing? I’ll shoot you,” he said, according to the criminal complaint.

One officer received minor injuries and a second was treated at a local hospital and released.

The charges filed against him include: attempted disarming a peace officer, two counts of battery or threat to a judge, prosecutor or law enforcement officer; two counts of attempted battery or threat to a law enforcement officer; two counts of discharging bodily fluids at a public safety worker, three counts of misdemeanor bail jumping, resisting an officer and disorderly conduct. All charges were filed with a repeater enhancer.

Cox is being held in the Monroe County Jail while serving a sentence for carrying a concealed knife and resisting an officer, as well as on a $500 cash bond. He is scheduled for an initial appearance Nov. 22.
