Some changes to Wisconsin’s fishing opener

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- Wisconsin’s fishing opener is Saturday, May 2.

Even though the state’s ‘safer at home’ order runs until May 26th, outdoor activity is recognized as essential.

Because of the pandemic though, people are encouraged to fish close to home this year and continue to practice social distancing, whether it be on a boat, shore or a dock.

DNR Wardens are also reminding people that all regulations and license requirements are still in effect.

“People just need to keep in mind that boating laws pertain, we’re still out there enforcing the laws and regulations, make sure they have, this time of year if they’re taking their boat out, make sure they check their boat over, have the proper safety equipment in them,” said Wisconsin DNR Warden Dale Hochhausen.

Game fishing season is year round on the Mississippi River, but the DNR just recently changed a lot of the bag and size limits so they encourage you to check over the new rules before dropping a line.
