Solo and ensemble artists show off musical talents at Viterbo University

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – A different kind of playing was going on across town at Viterbo University Saturday.

Thousands of middle and high school student musicians from across the state performed at the Wisconsin School of Music Association State Solo and Ensemble Festival.

The pandemic canceled many in-person performances over the last two years. Organizers say getting back on stage in front of people is an important right of passage for these young musicians.

“It’s so important for the students to have an opportunity to perform in front of others, to show their skills, but also to show their dedication to the work,” Derek Menk of the Wisconsin School Music Association said. “And those skills will translate to no matter what job they have later in the future.”

Soloists and ensembles who earned a “Starred First” rating in the most difficult class qualify for the state music finals.
